This is a short explanation of a Service Grade Special from the former COO of the CMP, Orest Michaels in 2012: “Over the years. The CMP has pulled down crates one at a time and worked whatever was in those crates. The “work” consists of inspection, repair, sorting, and grading. Many of the crates have still not been worked and we do not know what we will find as we continue. We did find a number of what appeared to be unissued rifles (less any wood). Our assumption was that the wood had been used by the Army to support the Ceremonial Rifle Program. These are the ones we built into complete rifles and graded them as our Service Grade Specials. Since the original bulk “find”, we did not find any additional crates that had the same type of unissued rifles. It is possible we may find more as we continue the process, but we consider it highly unlikely”. This gun has all matching SA parts that are original to the gun when it was made. Important drawing numbers are: Receiver – F6528291, Barrel – F6535448, Bolt – 6528287, Op Rod – 6535382, Trigger Housing – 6528290, Hammer – D5546008, and Safety – SA 11. This rifle is unfired since being released by the CMP. The factory finish is in excellent condition with only a few scuffs and wear spots from storage. Since the original stock was likely used for the Ceremonial Rifle Program, the CMP has replaced it with a new walnut stock with a CMP cartouche. Muzzle reading is 1+, throat reading is 2+. Gun Registration Information
All guns with an “R” before the number must be registered. Licensed dealers must have a current copy of their FFL signed in ink in our files. No modern long guns sold to anyone under the age of 18, nor modern hand guns to anyone under 21. No hand guns sold to out of state residents who are not dealers. Residents of states requiring a purchase permit to buy long guns (I.E. New Jersey, etc.) must furnish this permit. Persons with Curio & Relic licenses may only purchase firearms listed as such by the B.A.T.F. and must provide a signed copy of that license. The purchaser pays any and all registration fees.
Your interpretation of “excellent”, “very good”, “good”, etc. may be very different than ours, when it comes to the description of the condition of these guns. You are the final judge of condition before you buy. Please examine any item you are interested in very carefully and decide, before you bid, if it is as you expected. Always have a gunsmith check a gun you purchased for possible defects. We do not warrant any gun to be in firing condition.
If you see any glaring mistakes in the catalog description of the guns, please inform us of the error prior to the start of the sale. This will allow us to let other buyers know of the correction before any items are sold.
We will now be adding a “(C&R)” designation to the gun listing, to indicate guns that can be given directly to buyers who are holders of Curio & Relic licenses. There may be guns that we miss that are C&R eligible. The burden of proof is on the buyer to show that a particular gun is C&R eligible. C&R guns are listed on the BATF website and in their C&R booklet. Guns that are at least 50 years old also qualify as Curio and Relics. C&R license holders are not required to fill out BATF form 4473, but must still pay the PA state $3.00 surcharge per gun.
And now a few words about antique guns. Federal law requires any firearm, made after 1898, to be registered. Even though a gun looks like an antique, we need proof it was made before 1898 before we can give it to you without registration. Since documentation of guns made by many obscure manufacturers is difficult and time consuming, we may, sometimes, incorrectly register a gun that might be an antique. We regret this error but in the case of a Federally licensed dealer, it’s better safe than sorry.
Thanks for your consideration and enjoy the auction.
